Career Programs (subject to funding)

GSA can offer a career workshop or a series of careers workshops at Section Meetings, if sections can provide a room and screen. Workshops are designed to connect students and recent college graduates with career and workforce skills that will lead to successful employment in the geosciences. We will aim to offer guest presenters from various career sectors in government, non-profit, academia, and private sector industries.

GSA is committed to partnering with Sections to build a workshop or event geared specifically to Section needs. The following are some examples of workshops that can be scheduled at Section Meetings:

  • Geoscience Career Workshop Part 1: Career Planning and Informational Interviewing. Your job hunting process should begin with career planning, not when you apply to jobs. This workshop will help you begin this process and will introduce you to informational interviewing. This section is highly recommended to freshman, sophomores and juniors. The earlier you start your career planning the better.
  • Geoscience Career Workshop Part 2: Geoscience Career Exploration. What do geologists in various sectors earn? What do they do? What are the pros and cons to working in academia, government, and industry? Workshop presenters, and when possible, professionals in the field, will address these issues.
  • Geoscience Career Workshop Part 3: Cover Letters, Resumes and CV’s. How do you prepare a cover letter? Does your resume need a good edit? Whether you are currently on the job market or not, learn how to prepare the best resume possible. You will review numerous resumes helping you to learn important resume do’s and don’ts.

GSA will lead and bring the LCD for this workshop and the GSA representative will work with Section Chairs to advertise the program on the Section Meeting website and in GSA Today. There are no funds to run this program so we ask sections to provide the room and an LCD support package. We will bring the projector. If you are interested in hosting one or more career workshop(s) please contact Jennifer Nocerino at the email below to set up this program.
