Eligibility Requirements

Be a current student member of the GSA Southeastern Section. Not a member? Join or Renew Be the presenting author on the paper or poster (paper or poster may have co-authors). Register for the meeting before submitting a travel grant application. Submit an application through the online Travel Grant Application Form. The form is available on the Students & ECPs page of the Section Meeting website or Connects website during the early registration period only.

Application Guidelines

Applications require active GSA Section membership and the following information: your first and last name, email address, mailing address, phone number, abstract title and ID, primary and secondary authors, institution, and confirmation of whether you are presenting. Please note that students may receive only one Section travel grant per meeting. To update your Section affiliation, log into your GSA profile . To add an additional complimentary Section affiliation, please contact gsaservice@geosociety.org .

Application Status Notification

Student travel grant decisions will be communicated through email before the meeting registration cancellation deadline. If your attendance depends on receiving a travel grant and you are not selected, you will be eligible for a full registration refund. Checking in at the Registration Desk (badge pick-up) upon your arrival at the meeting will confirm your attendance; no other check-in will be required. You are no longer required to send a separate GRANT PROPOSAL to the section. However, you do have to complete and submit the SE APPLICATION FORM if you want your proposal considered by the Section. The deadline for submission is 18 February , the same as that of the grant proposal. The grants are competitive and will be awarded in late May. Students and applications must meet the following criteria: The student must be enrolled at an institution within the Southeastern Section [see boundaries] The student must be a student member of GSA. Not sure? Check your membership status. Not a Member? Join or Renew. The online application must be completed during the application period ending 10 April. Funding decisions will be announced 1 June with funds being mailed to successful applicants in early July. Funded students are expected to expend the funds as stated in the proposal; return any unexpended funds to the Section Secretary The Applicants should have the goal of presenting their funded research results at a Southeastern Section or GSA Annual meeting. Funding generally does not exceed ~$1000.

The proposal should follow this sequence: Complete the online application . (Download sample application/worksheet ). Proposal narrative. This must include 1) Descriptive Title, 2) Objective, 3) Significance, and 4) Methods Used. Please note format: maximum of 1000 words: minimum 10pt font; maximum of four pages double-spaced, including any tables, figures, and bibliography. If this limit is exceeded the application will be disqualified. This will be uploaded to the online application using the Project Upload and should be in a PDF or Word document format. Itemized budget. Please include a table of all potential sources of funds, prior or pending funding, and a brief (1-2 sentences maximum) justification of each item. This will be uploaded to the online application using the Budget Upload and should be in a PDF, Word or Excel document format. Funding generally does not exceed ~$1000. Your project supervisor will be contacted requesting they complete a recommendation form in the online application system. Please make sure your supervisor is aware that they must do this in order for your proposal to be considered.

Student Travel Grants

The Southeastern Section of the Geological Society of America is pleased to offer student travel support to the annual Section meeting (SEGSA) as well as GSA Connects for students who are presenting their research. All eligible students will receive some support, the amount depending on the number of applicants. Grants are normally in the $100-$150 range.
