Joshua Martin to Serve as GSA Congressional Science Fellow

Boulder, Colo., USA: The Geological Society of America is proud to announce that Joshua Martin, GSA’s current Science Policy Fellow, will serve as a GSA-sponsored Congressional Science Fellow for the 2026–2027 fellowship cycle.

The announcement comes as GSA marks the 40th anniversary of the GSA–USGS Congressional Science Fellowship. This longstanding partnership brings the actionable Earth science exemplified by USGS directly into federal decision-making. This year, GSA is excited to help send two outstanding geoscientists to Capitol Hill—a first for the organization.

“This anniversary is a reminder of how much effective federal decision-making depends on strong, independent Earth science,” said Bridgette Moore, GSA Executive Director and CEO (Interim). “Joshua has been an exceptional Science Policy Fellow. His work has helped GSA engage in policy decisions on modern geologic mapping and communicate why it is essential to national security, economic prosperity, and public safety. We are delighted to see him bring that expertise to Congress during such a consequential year.”

Martin earned his undergraduate degree in Geological Sciences from Ohio University, with minors in math and physics, and completed his Ph.D. at The Ohio State University. His doctoral research focused on high-precision models of material properties for Earth and rocky exoplanets. He also previously served as a graduate research assistant at Los Alamos National Laboratory. As a Congressional Science Fellow, Martin will bring his geoscience expertise and policy experience directly to Capitol Hill.

GSA is honored to support Martin as he takes this important step in public service. The Science Policy Fellowship, which pairs geoscientists with GSA’s Geoscience Policy Office to train in federal policy engagement, will reopen in 2027.
