Presentation Awards

Awards for the best graduate and undergraduate student posters and papers are supported by the GSA North-Central Section and by the Great Lakes Section–SEPM (Society for Sedimentary Geology). To be eligible, students must be lead authors and presenters, and should be capable of answering detailed questions about their research.

  • Geoscience Career Workshop Part 1:
    Career Planning and Informational Interviewing.

    Monday, 16 April, 9-10 a.m., Location: 150/154 Scheman.
    Your job-hunting process should begin with career planning, not when you apply for jobs. This workshop will help you begin this process and will introduce you to informational interviewing. This section is highly recommended for freshmen, sophomores, and juniors. The earlier you start your career planning the better.
  • Geoscience Career Workshop Part 2:
    Geoscience Career Exploration.

    Monday, 16 April, 10-11 a.m., Location: 150/154 Scheman.
    What do geologists in various sectors earn? What do they do? What are the pros and cons to working in academia, government, and industry? Workshop presenters, and professionals in the field, will address these issues.
  • Geoscience Career Workshop Part 3:
    Cover Letters, Resumes and CVs.

    Tuesday 17 April, 9-10 a.m., Location: 150/154 Scheman.
    How do you prepare a cover letter? Does your résumé need a good edit? Whether you are currently in the market for a job or not, learn how to prepare the best résumé possible. You will review numerous résumés helping you to learn important résumé dos and don’ts.

  • Roy J. Shlemon Mentor Program in Applied Geoscience Luncheon.
    Mon., 16 April, 12-1:30 p.m. Location: 150/154 Scheman.
    Students will have the opportunity to discuss career prospects and challenges with professional geoscientists from multiple disciplines over a FREE lunch. Learn more.
  • John Mann Mentors in Applied Hydrogeology Program Luncheon.
    Tues., 17 April, 12-1:30 p.m. Location: 150/154 Scheman.
    Students interested in applied hydrogeology or hydrology as a career will have the opportunity to network with professionals in these fields over a FREE lunch. Learn more.

Student Travel Grants

Deadline: 5 March 2018

Students who are GSA members and who register for the meeting are eligible to apply for student travel grants. The application form is available from this page only during the pre-registration period.
