Field Trips

FT1. Accreted Forearc, Continental, and Oceanic Rocks of Maryland’s Eastern Piedmont: The Potomac Terrane, Baltimore Terrane, and Baltimore Mafic Complex.

Description: This field trip follows a transect through three major tectonostratigraphic assemblages in the eastern Maryland Piedmont. We will cross from east to west through exposures of the Baltimore Mafic Complex, Baltimore Terrane, and Potomac Terrane, in the Patapsco River Valley west of Baltimore, Maryland.

FT2. Quaternary Evolution and Contemporary Fluvial Processes, White Clay Creek, Delaware–Pennsylvania. (Canceled)

Description: We highlight deposits of the White Clay Creek and explore implications for contemporary fluvial processes. New data document Quaternary bedrock incision and a mix of colluvium, mill pond deposits, laterally and vertically accreted floodplains, pre-settlement gravel bars, wetland deposits, and nutrients and sediment loading derived from fluvial erosion.

Description: This trip to classic south-central Pennsylvania outcrops provides experience for K–12 educators to investigate rocks, geomorphology, and fluvial processes in the field. Each stop will include active investigation of the outcrops, discussion of the geology and geologic history of the region, and discussion of how the field experiences can be translated to classroom lessons and activities.

FT4. Geology along the York County Heritage Rail Trail. (Canceled)

Description: The York County Heritage Rail Trail is found in the Piedmont and runs 26 miles from north of York southward to the Mason-Dixon Line. The trail cuts across a number of sedimentary and metamorphic formations ranging in age from Lower Cambrian to the Ordovician. We will use stops to study the lithology and structural aspects.

FT5. Historical and Current Paleontological Collections at The Academy of Natural Sciences of Drexel University, Philadelphia. (Canceled)

Description: This field trip is a guided exploration of research collections at the Academy of Natural Sciences in Philadelphia. The collections document the early history of paleontology in North America, as well as active research on Late Devonian vertebrates from Pennsylvania, Nunavut, and Antarctica.
