TRAVEL GRANTS

The North-Central Section of the Geological Society of America is pleased to offer student travel support to the annual Section meeting (NCGSA) as well as GSA Connects for students who are presenting their research.

Eligibility Requirements

1. Be a current student member of the GSA North-Central Section.
   Not a member? Join or Renew
2. Register for the meeting before submitting a travel grant application.
3. Submit an application through the online Travel Grant Application Form.
   The form is available on the Students & ECPs page of the Section Meeting website or Connects website during the early registration period only.
4. Priority will be given to students presenting oral or poster presentations.

Application Guidelines

Applications require active GSA Section membership and the following information: your first and last name, email address, mailing address, phone number, abstract title and ID, primary and secondary authors, institution, and confirmation of whether you are presenting. Please note that students may receive only one Section travel grant per meeting.

• To add an additional complimentary Section affiliation, please contact gsaservice@geosociety.org.

Application Status Notification

Student travel grant decisions will be communicated before the registration cancellation deadline. If your attendance depends on receiving a travel grant and you are not selected, you will be eligible for a full registration refund.

Checking in at the Registration Desk (badge pick-up) upon your arrival at the meeting will confirm your attendance; no other check-in will be required.

UNDERGRADUATE STUDENT RESEARCH GRANTS

The North-Central Section of the Geological Society of America offers competitive undergraduate research grants to students enrolled in institutions of higher education in the North-Central Section and who are student members of the Geological Society of America. Grant maximum is $750 per project.

Students and applications must meet the following criteria:

• The student must be enrolled at an institution within the North-Central Section [see boundaries]
• The student must be a student member of GSA.

• The online application must be completed during the application period ending 10 April. Funding decisions will be announced after 15 May (extended in 2022) with funds being mailed to successful applicants by 30 June.
• Funded students are expected to expend the funds as stated in the proposal; return any unexpended funds to the Section Secretary; submit a summary report (2-3 pages) upon completion of the project.  The Section strongly encourages that the results of the funded research be reported at a North-Central Section meeting, as well. The North-Central Section routinely provides Travel Grants for student members to attend the section meetings and provides awards for student papers presented.

The proposal should follow this sequence:

1. Complete the online application.
   (Download sample application/worksheet.)
2. Proposal narrative.
   This will include the purpose and significance of the proposal research, and the methods employed to complete the research. (Recommended length of the narrative is 1-2 pages). Upload to the online application in the Project Upload area (PDF or Word only).
3. Itemized budget.
   Please include information on all additional sources of funding for the project, including previous and pending sources of funding. Upload to the online application in the Budget Upload area (PDF or Word only).
4. Your project supervisor will be contacted requesting they complete a recommendation form in the online application system. Please make sure your supervisor is aware that they must do this in order for your proposal to be considered.
