This half-day workshop will provide an overview of modern data collection and groundwater monitoring methodologies and demonstrate how to use high-resolution datasets to develop an effective monitoring network. This workshop will also discuss challenges associated with comparing modern and legacy datasets and provide examples where using modern methods have resulted in valuable insights being gained from legacy data sets. This course will be offered in conjunction with the Environmental Professionals of Connecticut (EPOC) for 4 CT LEP CECs.

Revisiting the Geology of Central Park, Manhattan, NYC. On this full-day trip, we will highlight recent field mapping, geochronology, and metamorphic P/T calculations seen in New York’s Central Park. We will see highly deformed exposures of the Hartland and Manhattan Schists and discuss their context within the broader region of southern New England prior to and during the formation of Pangea.

The LIDAR Revolution in Earth Surface Mapping. From Data Downloads to Applications in Historic Land - Use Reconstruction and Surficial Geologic Mapping. Sponsored by the Eastern Section - SEPM. This full-day, hands-on workshop will review LiDAR data, downloading, visualization, and limitations and focus on two primary applications of LiDAR-based mapping and landform interpretation in the northeastern U.S. landscape: (1) mapping historical land use features (e.g., walls and charcoal hearths); and (2) updating and refinement of Quaternary geologic maps.

The Geologic Map Schema (GeMS) defines a standard database schema—a database design—for digital publication of geologic maps. This full-day course will give an overview of GeMS: how to get started, available documentation, tips and tricks, pitfalls to avoid, validation for compliance with the standard, tools for creating GeMS files or converting from other schema, and so forth.

Teaching the Anthropocene. Sponsored by the Eastern Section - SEPM This half-day short course will share the purpose, premise, structure, pedagogy, experience, and results (expected and unexpected) of the Univ. of Connecticut’s Dept. of Geoscience in developing, piloting, and teaching a large-enrollment introductory course titled “The Human Epoch: Living in the Anthropocene.” The goal of the short course is to help attendees profit from our experience when improving geoscience literacy education elsewhere, and for us to learn from the experience of others.

Burying the Park - Hartford and its Rivers. Cosponsored by Eastern Section - SEPM (Society for Sedimentary Geology) and GSA Quaternary Geology and Geomorphology Division. Combine geology, history, and art on this half-day walking trip as we explore themes of the global Anthropocene in a local setting. We will walk along the revitalized Connecticut riverfront while discussing the area’s history and relationship with New England’s longest river. Assisted by a member of the Wadsworth Atheneum, America’s oldest public art museum, we will also visit Carl Andre’s “Stone Field Sculpture,” which juxtaposes Connecticut’s geologic history with the brief human legacy of gravestones in the adjacent Ancient Burying Ground.

High Tech, Low Tech, No Tech? Developing Inclusive Field Experiences. A half-day exploration of techniques for designing field trips for attendees with diverse abilities, including “no-tech” inclusive field-trip practices, “low-tech” approaches using familiar technologies, and “high-tech” strategies for enabling remote collaboration, including fully virtual field experiences. Intended as a companion to our accessible field trip (not required).

Accessible Geology in the Hartford Basin. Cosponsored by the International Association for Geoscience Diversity (IAGD) and the Eastern Section - SEPM (Society for Sedimentary Geology). Explore the geology of the Hartford Basin via roadside outcrops and accessible park trails, including the Mesozoic sedimentary and volcanic units and Quaternary glacial deposits. Designed using inclusive field-trip practices, this half-day trip will encourage active participation by all attendees, regardless of ability. Participants may opt to attend virtually.
