Professor Christopher A-L. Jackson, the Chair in Sustainable Geoscience at the University of Manchester, is a prolific researcher, a dedicated mentor, and an advocate for early career and historically marginalized geoscientists. He is receiving the 2021 GSA Public Service Award for his work as a science communicator. In the 2020 Royal Institution Christmas lecture "Earth: A user's guide," he gave a quick tour through Earth history and the geologic controls on climate change, aimed at children but equally entertaining and enlightening for adults. In BBC's 2017 documentary "Expedition Volcano," he was part of a team studying the volcanic hazards of Nyiragongo and Nyamulagira in the Democratic Republic of Congo, showing that geology is an adventure but is also connected to the people who live on the land. Professor Jackson's science communication emphasizes that geology affects people and that people study geology, and exemplifies the goals of the Public Service Award.
