Dr. Rocío Paola Caballero-Gill is an award-winning geoscientist and an exceptional leader in the field. She is a pioneering advocate for the Latinx community, disabled scientists, and all minoritized groups in STEM. Her work has made innovative and impactful contributions both to paleoclimate research and to the creation of community-engaged initiatives that broaden participation in the geosciences.
Dr. Caballero-Gill has co-founded several internationally recognized organizations, including GeoLatinas and Climatematch Academy. GeoLatinas, founded in 2018, is a global organization that embraces, empowers, and inspires Latinas to pursue and thrive in Earth and Planetary Science careers. Rocío not only co-founded the organization but also served as its first president, driving many initiatives in this member-led community. Much of GeoLatinas’ mission and values are deeply rooted in Rocío’s own values and career-coaching experience, which have made the organization welcoming and inclusive to all who align with its mission. Similarly, Climatematch Academy is an international project designed to democratize climate science by empowering people from all backgrounds and increasing access to computational education and networking.
In addition to her service to the broader community, Dr. Caballero-Gill is a Research Assistant Professor at George Mason University, where she serves as Principal Investigator and Lead Director of the CycloCohort Program (Project 6), funded by the Heising-Simons Foundation. This program provides an early-career springboard for leadership in geoscience and astronomy with a focus on inclusion, diversity, equity, and justice. She designed a transformative model for equitable recruitment and selection of diverse graduate students and postdoctoral researchers in the CycloAstro Project, creating opportunities for individuals who might otherwise be overlooked by traditional recruitment processes. Beyond this, Rocío has also contributed to major initiatives such as the “Call for a Robust Anti-Racism Plan for the Geosciences” and was selected as part of the inaugural cohort of Academy Fellows for the prestigious AGU LANDInG program.
Rocío is a force of nature and one of the most inspiring role models in our field. The GSA Bromery Award is a reflection of the profound impact of her journey and the inspiration she provides to so many of us.

La Dra. Rocío Paola Caballero-Gill es una geocientífica galardonada y una líder excepcional en su campo. Es una defensora yactivista de la comunidad latina, de las personas con discapacidades y de todos los grupos históricamente marginados en STEM. Su trabajo ha hecho contribuciones innovadoras e impactantes tanto en la investigación paleoclimática como en lacreación de iniciativas comunitarias orientadas a ampliar la participación de las minorías en las geociencias.
La Dra. Caballero-Gill ha co-fundado varias organizaciones de reconocimiento internacional, entre ellas GeoLatinas y Climatematch Academy. GeoLatinas, fundada en 2018, es una organización global que busca abrazar, empoderar e inspirar alas latinas para que inicien y prosperen en carreras de Ciencias de la Tierra y Planetarias. Dear colleagues, friends, and family,
I am truly humbled to receive The Bromery Award. This honor is especially meaningful to me because of Randolph and Cecile’s legacy of advancing equity in the sciences, and because it places me among past recipients I have long admired, including Lisa White, Kathleen Johnson, Asmeret Berhe, Aradhna Tripati, Hendratta Ali, and so many others.
I am deeply grateful to my family: my husband, Giordon Gill; our two incredible children, Gio and Emi; my sisters, Carla and Algerlynn; my moms, Iris and Donna; and my dads, Juan and Bruce, who are no longer here with us. I am also thankful to Lina Pérez-Ángel for the inspiration she has provided over the years and for nominating me, and to mentors and colleagues supporting my nomination and have inspired me along the way—Steve, Linda, Erika, Julie, Nicole, and many othersy—who have guided, supported, and encouraged me. To be recognized by GSA with this award is touching, and to be recognized by this community I care for so deeply is profoundly moving.
This award is a reminder, especially now, that science flourishes when we embrace diverse voices and perspectives. More than ever, we must continue building an inclusive field—not only because it strengthens our science, but because it is a moral imperative. I accept this honor with gratitude and renewed commitment to ensure that every student and professional knows they belong.
