Dr. Jeffery R. Stone has made meaningful contributions to the field of paleolimnology through the use of diatoms as indicators of climate and environmental change. Since getting his PhD in 2005, Dr. Stone has continuously worked toward enriching this field by focusing on diatom taxonomy, and more importantly, by making these advances available to both the scientific community and the broader public. Through his outreach efforts, Dr. Stone has brought the importance and diversity of diatoms to the spotlight. Additionally, his work in understudied, yet vulnerable, regions like the Sierra Nevada, Central America and the East African lakes (and paleo lakes) has greatly contributed to our understanding of lake ecological change worldwide. His work is proof of the value continental scientific drilling has in the current changing world scenario, where working in the lab and building bridges with people becomes essential to strengthen knowledge and the community as a whole.
