GPS on ripplesEarthCache Sites

The most exciting way to learn about the Earth and its processes is to get into the outdoors and experience it first-hand. Visiting an EarthCache site is a great outdoor activity the whole family can enjoy. The Geological Society of America (GSA) administers the listing of EarthCache sites around the world.

An EarthCache site is a special place that people can visit to learn about a unique geoscience feature or aspect of our Earth. Visitors to EarthCache sites can see how our planet has been shaped by geological processes, how we manage the resources and how scientists gather evidence to learn about the Earth.

To develop your own EarthCache Site and share its educational value with others, follow the simple EarthCache Guidelines and record the EarthCache site via the submittal form. Once your site is approved by GSA, it is released to the wider community through geocaching.com.

As a part of geocaching — an adventure game for Global Positioning System (GPS) users to cache and find locations with actual hidden items — an EarthCache adventure is treasure hunting for the caches that the Earth has stored.EarthCache sites do not use stored containers; their treasure is the lessons people learn about our planet when they visit the site.

EarthCache sites are developed by geocachers who have knowledge of geoscience and have an interesting earth feature near them and would like to share it with the world. All you need to get started is a GPS receiver and a good idea.
