GSA Technical Program Is Live

The Geological Society of America's Annual Meeting: 4-7 November, Indianapolis, Indiana, USA

Boulder, CO, USA: The scientific program schedule is online and searchable now for the Geological Society of America’s Annual Meeting & Exposition to be held at the Indiana Convention Center (ICC) in Indianapolis, Indiana, 4-7 November 2018. Indianapolis is situated near the margin of Pleistocene glaciation, and is a prime venue for exploring the geology of the Midwest.

Members of the media and public information officers from scientific societies, educational institutions and government agencies, are invited to request complimentary press credentials , attend, and report from the meeting on the latest findings in earth-science research. GSA hosts an onsite newsroom to assist during the technical program hours.

GSA Presidential Address & Awards Ceremony
ICC, Sunday, 4 Nov., noon-1:30 p.m.
GSA President Robbie Rice Gries, Gries Energy Partners, LLC, will give her Presidential Address, titled, "Navigating 'Me too' in the Geosciences." Top awards will be presented to luminaries in the field.

Feed Your Brain: Lunchtime Enlightenment
Listen to current leaders in the geosciences with interesting stories to tell.
ICC, 5-7 Nov., 12:15-1:15 p.m.
Monday, the 2019 Michel T. Halbouty Distinguished Lecturer Ben Bussey, National Air & Space Administration (NASA), will speak on "Resources of the Moon."
Tuesday, recently confirmed United States Geological Survey (USGS) Director James Reilly will present.

A late-breaking session titled, " Kīlauea 2018:Geoscience and Communication during a high profile natural event ," will illuminate recent unprecedented events in Hawaii, and what scientists are learning from them.

Be sure to check out a special presentation in the poster hall stage area from Indiana University / Indiana Geological & Water Survey, titled, "Making Guided Earth Science Field Trips Accessible and Affordable Using Virtual Reality: A Virtual Walking Tour of the Indiana University Bloomington Campus Limestone Architecture."

Field trips are an iconic feature of the GSA meeting. This year there are 25 pre-, concurrent, and post-meeting trips. Repeated glacial cycles have left fantastic exposures of Quaternary sediments from classic glacial moraines and eskers to relict shorelines and dunes along the Great Lakes. Underlying these sediments, and exposed south of the city, are Paleozoic strata in a sequence of escarpments and plateaus that are home to classic outcrops and fossil locations, scenic waterfalls and deep gorges, and world-class karst landscapes and caves.

A field guide volume prepared for this 130th GSA Annual Meeting includes compelling science and field trips in Indiana, Illinois, Kentucky, Michigan, and Ohio. A wealth of geologic and human history collides in the Midwest, a confluence that led to the growth of America’s industry over the past two centuries. Watch for Ancient Oceans, Orogenic Uplifts, and Glacial Ice: Geologic Crossroads in America's Heartland , edited by Lee J. Florea, in the GSA store in October.

II. SCIENTIFIC PROGRAM

The technical program consists of a wide variety of oral and poster sessions, complimented by 29 short courses for extended learning.

Presentations are organized into several categories:
Pardee Keynote Symposia are of broad geoscientific interest, and include invited speakers:
• Earth as a Big Data Puzzle: Advancing Information Frontiers in Geoscience
• Women Rising: Removing Barriers and Achieving Parity in the Geosciences
• Plate Tectonics Paradigm 50 Years after the Seminal Work of Morgan, Mckenzie, and Le Pichon
• Human Evolution and Environmental History in Africa: 25 Years of Transformative Research

Topical Sessions are abstracts presentations organized on a thematic basis. Industry Track icons designate which sessions are most relevant for industry professionals, including energy, economic geology, hydrogeology, environmental geology, and engineering geology.

The program also includes discipline sessions, which are grouped according to research conducted in specific scientific disciplines (e.g., archeological geology, geochemistry, etc.).

The complete program schedule with abstracts is searchable online. Browse for sessions in your areas of interest or search for particular presentations by typing in keywords, an author's name, or a session title. You can also search discipline categories or sponsors using the drop-down menus, or use your browser's "find" feature to search for keywords or convener names.

III. MEDIA PARTICIPATION

Those with media credentials may participate in technical sessions, field trips, and other special events. Eligible media personnel will receive complimentary registration and are invited to use GSA-hosted newsroom facilities while at the meeting. Journalists and PIOs must pay for any short courses or field trips in which they wish to participate.

Public Information Officers of universities, government agencies, and research institutions can use the meeting as an opportunity to present research to on-site reporters through press releases, press conferences, a virtual press room, and one-on-one contact with the press.

Learn more about media eligibility for complimentary registration .

The media pre-registration deadline is Monday, 29 Oct. 2018 . After 29 Oct., media may register onsite at the main registration desk beginning Saturday morning, 3 Nov., at 7:00 a.m.

Massive ledges of cross-bedded sandstone from the Pennsylvanian Mansfield Formation overhang shales and siltstone of the Mississippian Borden Group at Shades State Park in Montgomery County, Indiana. The contact between the two is the Kaskaskia Unconformity from the early Pennsylvanian. Here, the unconformity truncates thick Mississippian carbonates present elsewhere in Indiana. The canyons at Shades State Park were formed as Sugar Creek, and other tributaries of the Wabash River, experienced rapid incision during the retreat of continental glaciers approximately 21,000 years ago.
