Staff Scientist Position in Stanford-USGS Micro Analysis Center (SUMAC)

Stanford University is searching for a career-level staff scientist to work within the Stanford-USGS Micro Analysis Center (SUMAC) to support SHRIMP-RG ion microprobe users who seek to acquire a wide variety of in situ isotopic and trace element data from extracted minerals, thin sections, and other samples. Primary responsibilities include providing assistance in the areas of sample preparation/characterization, proper standardization, instrument setup, data reduction, and interpretation of results. Time is also allocated for the staff scientist to lead new method development and strategic research directions that highlight the capabilities of SHRIMP-RG. The staff scientist will also have the opportunity to work collaboratively on projects that utilize complimentary in situ methods including NanoSIMS, laser ablation ICP-MS, and electron microprobe methodology. A PhD is required, with preference given to applicants with: (i) a well-rounded geologic, petrologic, geochemical background that includes a strong analytical background in SIMS and/or LA-ICPMS methods; (ii) a demonstrated ability to work closely and communicate effectively with laboratory staff and other stakeholders (iii) a strong desire to foster integrated studies with closely allied laboratories including NanoSIMS, LA-ICPMS, noble gas, and electron microprobe.
