Expanding Representation in Geosciences Scholarship

GSA aims to support geoscience students in reaching their full potential.

The goal of GSA’s Expanding Representation in Geosciences (ERG) Scholarship is to foster the success of diverse students and to encourage their persistence in GSA as Members, role models, and future leaders in the geosciences.

Application deadline: 3 May 2024

Undergraduate students from groups who are underrepresented in the geosciences are encouraged to apply for a scholarship. Up to six awards include:

  • $1,500 scholarship
  • Complimentary GSA student membership
  • Full meeting registration for the GSA Connects annual conference in 2023, where a student awards reception will be held
  • Inclusion in GSA’s On To the Future (OTF) program, which supports students from diverse communities to attend GSA Connects by offering partial travel funding, mentorship, and special sessions with leadership while at the meeting

Qualified applicants must be U.S. Citizens studying at an accredited university or college in one of GSA’s regional sections (including Canada and Mexico).

Student Application Requirements

  • Be a U.S. citizen and identify as a member of one or more underrepresented group(s);
  • Be studying as an undergraduate at an accredited university or college in one of GSA’s regional sections (including Canada and Mexico).

Application and Timeline

  • Applicant submits a completed online application form no later than the deadline.
  • Applicant uploads a copy of unofficial transcript no later than the deadline.
  • Applications are forwarded to the GSA Diversity in the Geosciences Committee for review.
  • GSA Diversity in the Geosciences Committee evaluates each application based on the applicant’s (1) commitment to geoscience and potential to participate in GSA, and (2) potential to contribute to expanding representation in geosciences and GSA.
  • All awards announced mid-summer.
