Field Workshop for K-12 Earth Science Teachers

Grand Canyon

Participants will enjoy five days of professional development geared specifically for the K-12 educator, home-school parents, and informal educators in order to raise geoscience literacy of future generations.

Workshop Features:

  • A mix of field and classroom activities;
  • A focus on local geology & issues at the state level tied to local teaching standards;
  • Field trips to classic geologic outcrops & natural geologic processes;
  • Field trips to sites related to a geology & industry;
  • Classroom activities focused on key content in a hands-on, pedagogically sound, ready-to-use form;
  • CEUs and 3 graduate credits available through the University of Northern Colorado.


Housing is provided in the Suites dormitories at Northern Arizona University, and includes semi-private rooms with a shared bathroom. A linen package with sheets, blanket, pillow and towels are provided though cold sleepers may want to bring an extra blanket just in case. If you have a preferred suitemate for the workshop please indicate their name in the appropriate space and ask that they indicate your name when registering. Suitemate selections will be honored where possible assuming all parties register for the workshop by the early registration deadline.

Parking permits are available through NAU Camps & Conferences for $7 per day if pre-ordered. Parking permits will be distributed at check in.



Northern Arizona University catering will provide food for the workshop. Meals on campus will be held in the assigned dining hall at breakfast, lunch and dinner. Participants will be issued appropriate identification for use in accessing the dining hall during the hours set by the university. Lunch on the field trips will be in bag form prepared by the university and transported with the bus on the field trip each day.

GSA is committed to providing GeoTeachers workshops for the entire population of educators. To assist us in finalizing the details of the field trips, please indicate if you require special accommodations or dietary considerations by checking the box on your registration form.


Cost: Registration: $500

Includes: 5 days (4 nights) dorm housing, food, transportation to/from field trip sites, workshop materials, and short courses
Maximum: 45 Participants
Transportation: to/from NAU-Flagstaff is the attendee's responsibility
Cancellation Policy: Participants needing to cancel can do so up to the early registration deadline receiving a refund of 50% of the registration fee.

Continuing Education & Graduate Credit Options

GeoTeachers is pleased to offer 43 continuing education units for participation in the Arizona 2018 workshop.

Those individuals seeking graduate credit in addition to these CEU’s, may register for the nominal fee of $100/credit for the 3 credit course ESCI 594-626: Contemporary Field Issues Workshop Title: Geology of Arizona for Teachers: The Colorado Plateau Summer 2018 (view syllabus) provided through the University of Northern Colorado.
