The 47th Annual Meeting of GSA's Northeastern Section will be held at the Hartford Marriott Downtown, which opened in 2005 and is in walking distance of parks along the Connecticut River, the Connecticut Science Center, the Wadsworth Atheneum Museum of Art, and a wide range of restaurants and eateries. The 22-story hotel has a spa, a rooftop pool and workout facility, and an award-winning restaurant and is a Connecticut Green Lodging certified property.
Hartford is one of the oldest cities in the United States and is in the final stages of a development project that has revitalized the downtown and renewed the city's connection to the Connecticut River.
The theme of the meeting, 200 Years of Geology in the Northeast, celebrates the 1818 founding of the American Journal of Science and the 1810 publication of the first memoir of the Connecticut Academy of Arts and Sciences, which included Benjamin Silliman's "Sketch of the Mineralogy of the Town of New Haven" and Noah Webster's "A Dissertation on the Supposed Change in the Temperature of Winter." The meeting will bring together diverse studies in basic and applied geology that build on the rich history of geologic thought in the region and highlight new directions for the future of the science.
