New Documentary on The Future of Energy by GSA Fellow Scott Tinker
Scott Tinker, state geologist of Texas, GSA Fellow, and former AAPG president, has put together a compelling, pragmatic documentary about global energy solutions. Switch highlights visits to leading energy sites around the world -- from coal to solar, oil to biofuels -- and investigates the challenge of transitioning to alternative sources of energy. The film is part of the Switch Energy Project, an effort to lead a balanced national energy conversation, which focuses on education at the primary and university levels.
The 2012 GSA North-Central Section Meeting in Dayton, Ohio, on 23–24 April made news when local amateur geologist Ron Fine, a member of the local group "Dry Dredgers," brought his large fossil find to the meeting, hoping GSA scientists could help identify it. The story was first picked up by Fox News on 24 April, and more than a dozen news outlets followed. Descriptions of the fossil (which was discovered in elliptical pieces) range from "mystery sea beast" to "Godzillus."
