Maps & Charts Guidelines

General Information

Series of large-sheet or format publications encompassing a great variety of geologic information for use in the classroom or laboratory, including geologic maps, cross sections, structure sections, bathymetric charts, stratigraphy charts, gravity maps, and magnetic maps. Most include color and include texts. Available in print (Maps & Charts series) or online (Digital Maps & Charts series) formats. The Maps & Charts Science Editor determines the final accepted format.

Maps & Charts Submission Guidelines

Maps or charts submitted for print publication must be cleanly drafted and reproduced at a readable size. Maps for the online series must be delivered in a widely usable electronic format. This includes the vector formats PostScript and PDF, and raster formats JPEG, GIF, and TIFF. Authors are encouraged to submit any underlying data, such as GIS files, as long as the necessary metadata are provided.

All contributions undergo review by the editor and at least one external reviewer. The author must submit some explanatory text and/or a map or chart legend. Text will be peer reviewed, and copy edited as needed.

ALL SUBMISSIONS MUST INCLUDE 3 PRINTED COPIES OF THE MAP OR CHART AND ACCOMPANYING TEXT FOR REVIEW PURPOSES.

ALL PRINT SUBMISSIONS MUST INCLUDE A PRINTED PROOF TO ACURATELY MATCH THE COLOR (4-COLOR OR BLACK & WHITE) AND THE FINAL SIZE OF THE MAP.

ALL ONLINE SUBMISSIONS MUST INCLUDE GRAPHICS AND DATA FILES TO BE AVAILBLE AT GSA.
