GSA Books

THE GSA BOOK SERIES

As part of its mission to advance the science of geology, the Geological Society of America publishes peer-reviewed scholarly books, most of them as Special Papers or Memoirs. The GSA Books Science Editor will decide whether a proposed volume is more suitable for the Special Paper or Memoir series.

The Special Paper series is for state-of-the-art treatments of rapidly evolving subjects; nearly all symposium-based volumes fall into this category.

The Memoir series presents thorough, well-illustrated treatments of topics; expected to be definitive works on a subject for a decade or more.

The Reviews in Engineering Geology series is the product of GSA's Environmental and Engineering Geology Division, which is responsible for the review process and acceptance of manuscripts in this series.

Often of general interest, Field Guides are written for field trips held at GSA and other organizations’ meetings. Contact

if you are interested in compiling a Field Guide for a GSA Section or Annual Meeting.

SUBMITTING YOUR BOOK PROPOSAL

Potential authors and editors for future GSA books should submit electronically a one-page proposal outlining the book. This proposal should include a preliminary table of contents (on second page if necessary) with possible authors for each chapter. It should include a statement as to why GSA should publish the book and the audience for whom it is intended. Please note if the book is intended for specialists or if it will appeal to a more general earth sciences audience.

Steps for proposing and producing GSA Special Papers and Memoirs

Please send book proposals to April Leo at books@geosociety.org.

The publication process for GSA Books takes 6-8 months, once the Science Editor has accepted the volume.

Author Perks

For accepted books, volume editors will each receive two complimentary copies of the book (chapter authors each receive one copy and 50 electronic reprints, available as PDF downloads, of their chapter). All authors may purchase additional copies of the book at a 50% discount off the list price.

GSA's Special Papers, Memoirs, and Reviews in Engineering Geology volumes have been selected for inclusion in the Thomson Reuters Book Citation Index. Content from 2005 onward will appear in the Web of Science and contribute toward H factors.
