Mentor Programs
Geology in Government

This popular program, supported by the GSA Foundation, features a FREE lunch for undergraduate and graduate students with a panel of professional geoscientists representing a broad spectrum of government agencies and other positions associated with public policy. These mentors will answer questions, offer advice about preparing for a career in government, and comment on the prospects for current and future job opportunities with their agencies.
The mentors discuss topics such as:
- The current and anticipated future role of geoscientists within each mentor's particular government segment.
- Discussion of interesting or highly visible geoscience projects currently in progress.
- Current and future job opportunities within each mentor's agency. How and who to contact for additional information.
This event is only held at GSA's Annual Meeting and it attracts over 300 students each year. The informal Q&A luncheon setting of this program is driven by students questions and all students registered for the Annual Meeting will receive a free ticket to this event with their badge packet on site. The first 300 students in line will be admitted.
Previous attendees have commented:
- Gave me great insight into what government jobs are out there for geologists and how to go about finding one I would enjoy
- Panel helped me to sort through potential websites to contact for a job after grad school. Internship info and suggestions were very useful
- The panel initiated ideas I hadn’t considered. Also, some major questions for me were answered like, “Am I over-qualified with a PhD?”
- It was useful to hear what government employees from different agencies had to say and get a good comparison
- Good panel members. I liked that this was Q&A from the audience because we covered a huge range of topics
