Description
![]() |
The ca. 15 Ma, 28 km Ries crater is one of the best preserved impact craters on Earth. It is located about 120 km NW of Munich. The field trip will show the morphology of the crater, typical outcrops of ejected impactites (Bunte Breccia, suevite, impact melt), displaced shocked megablocks of sedimentary and crystalline basement rocks and post-impact crater lake formations. All field–trip stops are roadside with short walking. A visit to the Ries Crater Museum in Nördlingen is included. Accommodation will be in the medieval city of Nördlingen. The field trip will terminate with a short visit to the 3.5 km - wide Steinheim Basin impact crater, ca. 30 km SE of the Ries.
