Dear [ insert name ]
I'm an active member of The Geological Society of America. We are in the process of developing the technical program for the Society's 121st annual meeting, which will be held at the Oregon Convention Center in Portland, Oregon, USA, on 18–21 October 2009.
This year's meeting is shaping up to be one of our best, with several new events and lectures, and I think your work could be an important addition. I'd like to encourage you to submit an abstract.
To give you some background, GSA is a broad, unifying scientific society with more than 22,000 members in 97 countries (visit www.geosociety.org to learn more about GSA). We expect more than 6,000 geoscientists across all disciplines to attend this annual meeting.
Access session descriptions and view the technical program at www.geosociety.org/meetings/2009/techprog.htm.
You can submit your abstract online at www.geosociety.org/meetings/2009/techprog.htm. The cost is US$35 for professionals and US$20 for students. The deadline is 11 August 2009.
I'd be happy to talk with you about the meeting and answer any questions you might have regarding your decision to participate. We're looking forward to a great technical program in Portland, and I hope you'll be part of it!
