In 2004, five spacecraft are exploring Mars simultaneously, providing us with an unprecedented opportunity to study the surface and subsurface of this intriguing planet. Critically, given the need to promote development of a scientifically literate populace in today's changing world, the new Mars data provide a powerful new mechanism for engaging public interest-presenting geoscientists with a wonderful new tool for promoting education and outreach efforts. By bringing together scientists and educators working with data from active missions, this Pardee Symposium will showcase some recent science results and demonstrate how available data can be used to enhance geoscience education activities. An evening public forum on Mars "The Latest (Red) Dirt from the Mission Makers" will provide an opportunity for the general public to learn more about the Mars mission.
