Job Summary:
1. Utilizes expertise from the broad field of geotechnics including subsurface investigation, soil sampling, rock coring, seismic and borehole interpretations and installation of dam safety instrumentation in performance of work activities. Has a good understanding of the Earth’s history and the processes that have formed it, including the behavior of rocks, magnetic principles, rock formations, groundwater, the ocean floor, fossils, etc. Experienced in investigation of the composition, structure, and history of the Earth’s crust through the collection, examination, measurement, and classification of soils, minerals, rocks, and fossil remains and how these factors can affect the various components of a dam.

2. Analyze and evaluate dam safety instrumentation. Evaluate the performance of the dam based on the existing information and knowledge of the subsurface characteristics. Responsible for proper interpretation of data and decisions regarding possible dam safety issues.

3. Provide geological technical direction and support to engineers and support personnel. Experienced in planning detailed field investigations.

4. Serve as project engineer for assigned projects. Duties include leading the project team, establishing and accomplishing scope, monitoring all phases of project performance, approving project changes within approved limits, and conducting lessons learned reviews at project completion.

5. Performs, directs, or reviews studies or design work on dams and appurtenant works. Develops design guides and criteria, as required.

6. Provides support during dam safety emergencies and emergency preparedness drills.

Supervision Received:
Supervisor provides the priority, scope of assignments, and general results expected. This position will often be assigned unusual and complex problems within their area of expertise and will be expected to solve issues independently with minimal supervision.

Skills and Proficiencies:
In-depth knowledge of geology and geotechnics of the Tennessee valley. Broad knowledge in dam engineering, dam safety inspections, dam performance monitoring and instrumentation, geotechnical engineering, soils analysis; seismic considerations; environmental permitting; construction processes; leadership; supervision; communication and interpersonal; sound knowledge of all engineering disciplines; project management; engineering economy; dam safety guidelines

Minimum Requirements:
A bachelor’s degree in geology or related engineering field with emphasis in geotechnics from an accredited school. An advanced degree is desirable.

A minimum of ten years as a geologist/engineer with a minimum of five years in the dam safety field.

A license as a professional geologist or professional engineer is highly desirable.
