GeoVenture Memories
Iceland for Teachers GeoTrip - 2004
Six enthusiastic teachers/educators participated in a wonderful GeoVentures trip to Iceland last month. The ten day trip (July 14-28) was organized to illustrate the excitement of geoscience — by living on a Mid-Ocean Ridge. Travelers experienced rift valleys, geothermal hot springs, volcanoes of all sorts and descriptions, and amazing waterfalls, icecaps and glaciers. Teaching specimens and photographs were collected to expand each participant’s teaching toolbox.
Teachers in the group came from North Carolina, Georgia, Massachusetts, Colorado, and Texas. Their experience ranged from Elementary through High School — but all were highly motivated and enthusiastic educators.
This trip is part of GSA’s Teacher Advocate Program, which aims to build a group of teachers who are advocates for Earth science. The cost of each trip is met by the teachers, many of whom seek grants or other funding sources so that they can participate. A Hawaiian GeoVenture held in early July had 24 participants!
