Grand Mesa basalt flows (9.5-10.8 Ma) overlie river gravels of the ancestral Colorado River that are ~1500 m above the modern Colorado in the Grand Valley of western Colorado. This field trip will examine evidence for Neogene uplift of the Colorado Rockies and its effects on the origin of the upper Colorado River system.
