Kenneth N. Weaver Student Travel Grants Stephen G. Pollock Undergraduate Student Research Grants

The Northeastern Section has travel funds available for students presenting at either the regional NE Section Meeting or the national GSA Annual Meeting.

To be considered for a travel grant, the student must:

  • be a student member of GSA;
    Not a member? JOIN NOW
  • be registered for the meeting BEFORE applying for a travel grant;
  • be enrolled in an institution within the Northeastern Section (see boundaries);
  • must be the author or co-author, and be present during the oral or poster presentation;
  • complete online Travel Grant Application Form (link available from "Students" page in the meeting announcement during the pre-registration period); and
  • use the grant for travel expenses to that meeting.

Grant recipients must pick up their reimbursement checks in person with photo ID at the meeting.

Notification of grant status will be made prior to the cancellation deadline, so if your attendance is dependent on receipt of a travel grant and you do not receive it, you may obtain a full registration refund.

The Northeastern Section of the Geological Society offers grants to support individual research by sophomore or junior undergraduates attending universities within geographic boundaries of the Northeastern Section. Students should have the objective of presenting the results of their research at a Northeastern Section or Annual GSA meeting. Funding generally does not exceed ~$1,000 per proposal.


Students and applications must meet the following criteria:

  • The student must be enrolled at an institution within the Northeastern Section (see boundaries).
  • The student must be a student member of GSA.
  • If more than one application is submitted from one department, the Chair of the department must rank the proposals.
  • Funds may not be used for salaries and stipends and funding may be requested for only one year at a time. Students may submit proposals in two consecutive years, even if funded previously.
  • Proposals must be received via e-mail no later than 17 February 2015.
  • Students will be notified following the Northeastern Section Meeting in Lancaster.
  • Funded students are expected to expend the funds as stated in the proposal; return any unexpended funds to the Section Secretary; and submit a written report of the research and disposition of funds to the Section Secretary within three months of completion of the project.

The proposal should follow this sequence

  1. Application cover sheet
  2. Proposal narrative.This will include purpose, significance and methods used. (Recommended length of the narrative is 1-2 pages)
  3. Itemized budget. Please include all potential sources of funds, including prior or pending funding.
  4. Letter of endorsement from project supervisor.

Deadline for all proposals is 17 February 2015.
