Hawaii — The Big Island

Living on an active hot spot volcano

Summary

Join GSA for a specially designed geo-science expedition to the Big Island of Hawaii for an in-depth observation and discussion around the unique geological phenomenon of Hawaii. During your expedition you will focus on a variety of themes both involving the geological formations of the region and the environmental context of the people and biological communities.

Eruption and weather permitting, experience first hand an active lava flow!

This is a trip of a life time. You will get to experience the world of volcanics and be able to take that experience right back into your classroom. This trip includes all lectures, notes, hikes, park entry fees, ground transportation, accommodation and most meals.

A seamless mix of site-lectures that provide background and field trips that emphasize “hands-on” activities, this program will allow you to spend most of your time outside interacting with the environment. Even transports between sites are designed to allow plenty of time for observation and discussion.

Highlights:

• Explore the Geology of 70 million years of volcanism, migration, and evolution in Hawaii Volcanoes National Park
• Experience the summit of Kilauea Volcano via the Crater Rim Drive an 11-mile road that encircles the summit caldera, passes through desert, lush tropical rain forest, and traverses the caldera floor
• Explore the East Rift and coastal area of the Park via Chain of Craters Road
• Hike in the area of the recent this dynamic eruption on Kilauea`s East Rift Zone
• Enjoy a full day exploration driving around the entire island to see black sand beach, green sand beach, Lapahoehoe site of Tsunami, a cinder cone and much more!

The trip is open to all elementary, middle and high school teachers.

Leader: Gary B. Lewis is the Director of Education and Outreach for GSA. Gary has been running trips for teachers to Hawaii since the 1990's. He is a geologist by training and a school teacher by trade. As well as a deep knowledge of all aspects of geoscience, Gary's experience in developing classroon ready materials and his sense of humor add another dimension to the trips he leads.
