Iceland 08: Plate Tectonics Alive!

Learn About Geoscience on a Mid-Ocean Ridge

Waterfall
26 July - 2 August 2008

Summary

Join GSA for a specially designed geo-science expedition to Iceland for an in-depth observation and discussion around the unique geological phenomenon of Iceland. During your 8 day expedition you will focus on a variety of themes both involving the geological formations of the region and the environmental context of the people and biological communities.

A seamless mix of site-lectures that provide background and field trips that emphasize "hands-on" activities, this program will allow you to spend most of your time outside interacting with the environment. Even transports between sites are designed to allow plenty of time for observation and discussion.

Iceland is an island of contrasts, a land of glaciers, erupting volcanoes, and the midnight sun. Geology and its northerly latitude combine to shape Iceland's culture. The sun shines round-the-clock in the summer months and under it Vikings created ancient seafaring history. Still the most sparsely populated country in Europe, the country's uninhabited interior is an arctic desert, punctuated with mountains, glaciers, volcanoes and waterfalls. Experience the natural contrasts during this 8-day excursion as you explore glaciers, icebergs, volcanoes, and hot springs. Invigorate yourself with the adventurous activities available in this unique land. Imagine yourself exploring with the Vikings as you discover their history. All of Holbrook's Programs offer an equal dose of natural history, culture, and fun as you explore the best of our diverse destinations.
