DAILY ITINERARY

Day 1: Sat 30 Aug

Arrive at Calgary International Airport. Free shuttle from airport to the Radisson Calgary. Please call (403) 291-4666 for airport pick-up.
Check-in at Radisson Calgary Airport Hotel
Dinner on your own around town.

7:00–8:30

Welcome reception, trip orientation, and presentation / overview of what is to come during the week. Light food, beer & wine will be served at reception.

Overnight Calgary, Radisson


Day 2: Sun 31 Aug

7:00

Breakfast at Radisson hotel

8:00

Depart for Drumheller, Alberta

9:30

Arrive at Royal Tyrrell Museum of Paleontology

12:30

Lunch served at museum

1:15

Traverse East Coulee to view hoodoos & abandoned Atlas Coal Mine

3:30

Return to Calgary

5:00

Arrive back in Calgary to hotel
Dinner on your own around Calgary

Overnight Calgary, Radisson


Day 3: Mon 1 Sept

7:00

Breakfast at Radisson hotel

8:00

Depart for Dinosaur Provincial Park, UNESCO World Heritage Site

10:00

Spend day walking around park observing excavations and touring site

12:00

Picnic lunch

3:00

Return Calgary (option for one van to stay behind if small group stays longer)

5:00

Arrive back to hotel, dinner on your own around Calgary

Day 4: Tue 2 Sept

7:00

Breakfast at Radisson hotel, check-out, pack vans

8:30

Depart for Banff area
Possible visit to ammolite jewelry factory (might still be possible especially if raining, but there are time constraints)
Glacial geology & geology of the foothills and front range

12:00

Picnic lunch in the field (overlook at Cochrane)

5:00

Arrive hotel in Canmore, check-in, dinner on your own around town

Overnight Canmore, Radisson


Day 5: Wed 3 Sept

7:00

Breakfast at hotel

8:00

Depart for Banff

9:30

Arrive Cave & Basin, Canada’s First National Park Gondola up Sulphur Mountain Option to hike down or ride down in Gondola

Free time in afternoon to do as you please Dinner on your own in Banff, or restaurant at top of Gondola

Overnight Canmore, Radisson

Day 6: Thu 4 Sept

7:00

Breakfast at hotel, check-out, pack vans

8:30

Depart for Columbia Icefield, stop at Bow Summit, Peyto Lake, Modern ice geomorphology and discussion of climate change

12:00

Picnic lunch in the field Visit Athabasca Glacier Travel to Golden, BC

5:30

Arrive at hotel

6:30

Farewell dinner in Golden

Overnight at Golden, British Columbia


Day 7: Fri 5 Sept

7:00

Breakfast at hotel, check-out, pack vans

8:30

Depart to see location of Burgess Shale (UNESCO World Heritage Site) view from Emerald Lake. Return to Lake Louise and Moraine Lake.

12:00

Lunch Lake Louise Free time Château Lake Louise

4:30

Return to Calgary

Overnight Calgary, Radisson


Day 8: Sat 6 Sept – END OF TOUR

Travel home day. Free shuttle from hotel to airport.
