Trip Overview

Join GSA on this 7 day excursion from Calgary through Banff National Park to view some of Canada's best scenery and geology! Highlights include visiting the Royal Tyrrell Museum of Paleontology, viewing the hoodoos of the badlands, Dinosaur Provincial Park, & Banff National Park. We will also discuss effects of climate change and visit outstanding glaciers.

Scientific Program

This week long trip will examine the geological setting of the badlands, foothills, and mountains of western Alberta and the edge of eastern British Columbia. The excursion is aimed at geology amateurs, professionals, and retirees who wish to learn more about the geoscience of this Canadian region. General stratigraphy of the region, aspects of paleontology, geomorphology, structural geology, Quaternary geology, as well as glaciers and landforms will be covered. Alan Morgan trip leader

Trip LEADER

Dr. Alan Morgan has been a Professor of Geology at University of Waterloo, Ontario for 37 years. He has led geology field trips to Iceland, Greece, Mexico, US Southwest, and around Canada. He has been a national geoscience lecturer in Canada for several years and has given over 800 lectures to external groups. He has been president of the American and Canadian Quaternary Associations and is heavily involved in geoscience education including the International Union of Geological Sciences (IUGS) Commission on Earth Science Education.

Registration Fee:

US $1,700 per person for GSA Member and Spouse.
