Montana Dinosaur Expedition — Paleo Dig7–16 July 2007 (10 days)
Type of Trip: Paleontology Minimum Number of Participants: 10 Trip OverviewThis 100% hands-on expedition will focus on field based research including the importance of data analysis using fossils documented and collected in the field. Our expert paleontologists will cover subjects like taphonomy, taxonomy, osteo-anatomy, sedimentology, fossil prep lab techniques, and geologic time using real life examples and museum artifacts. This program is NOT a tour but a hands-on dig. As a research team member, you are given the opportunity to learn and take part in actual field techniques used to find, collect, and preserve dinosaur fossils. Scientific Program & Itinerary:The daily schedule is set to take advantage of the weather. The mornings will be spent in the field, and afternoons in classes as well as the museum cataloging finds and doing fossil preparation. Every participant will get the opportunity to do all aspects of field and museum work. Evenings will be spent journaling, going over the day's activities, and planning for the next day. This is the perfect time for answering larger questions and sharing experiences as a group. Participants will also have a day boat tour of Fort Peck Lake to see great exposures of the different formations of strata in the Jordan area. Hatcher has lead 5 consecutive field seasons in the Cretaceous badlands of Montana's Hell Creek Formation as PWRF head paleontologist. He has led field expeditions consisting of student field teams and public clients. Duties included collection, preparation, and curation of dinosaur fossil specimens, organizing field research projects, assigning daily work duties to field staff, overseeing the excavation of dinosaur quarries, field preparation in our field lab and teaching students and other participants in preparation techniques, GIS mapping, use of RockWorks software in mapping stratigraphy, Microsoft Excel spreadsheets and graphs, use of GPS and other field tools, quarrying, plaster jacketing, prospecting, working with private landowners and business owners to assure a successful program. Accomplishments include the successful collection of Triceratops and hadrosaur skeletons, teaching, and educating. Field research has led to eight (8) current scientific publications, and presented over 25 lectures. Jason Poole: Poole is the Head Fossil Preparator for the Bahariya Dinosaur Project and PWRF Director of Educational Resources. His home base is the Academy of Natural Sciences in Philadelphia. Poole is the Dinosaur Hall Fossil Prep Lab manager and a Teacher Naturalist. Poole's focus is paleontology and has spent time digging in Egypt, Patagonia, Montana, New Jersey, New York and Pennsylvania. His experiences in the field are often utilized in his teaching, adding an element of reality to student's museum experience. Poole co-authored the announcement of a new species of gigantic Dinosaur (Paralatiton stromeri) in SCIENCE VOL 292 June first 2001.
