This 280 mile trip will travel the entire length of the Grand Canyon and run all of the infamous canyon rapids. We will stop for short side-canyon hikes and camp under the stars as Wayne explains the science behind the beauty. You will learn about the rich and varied ideas concerning the Grand Canyon's origin, both depositional and erosional. Traveling by boat allows you to sequentially view the named rock formations up close and personal. Scientific Program & ItineraryThe trip will highlight the formation of Grand Canyon's major rock groups - the tectonic development of the Middle Proterozoic Vishnu Group, the deposition of the Late Proterozoic Grand Canyon Supergroup, and the Paleozoic rocks in Grand Canyon. The trip will also focus on the Laramide to Quaternary development of the Grand Canyon landscape, with an emphasis on the enigmatic timing of Colorado Plateau uplift, the Laramide age peneplane, and the various modes that may have given rise to the Grand Canyon - headward erosion, and stream capture vs. catastrophic spillover of ancient lakes, etc. The science presented will be geared for students and professionals with some geologic training but perhaps are new to the science of Grand Canyon's mysterious origins and setting.
