Trip Overview
The educational objective of the tour is to introduce participants to the unique, dynamic, and rapidly changing glaciers of south-central Alaska, including an examination of their role in triggering the landscape evolution of the area. Additionally, tour participants will be introduced to the spectacular landscapes and geology of the areas visited.
Scientific Program & Itinerary
Participants will engage in "up-close" visits to several dozen glaciers in southern and central Alaska, where they will get first-hand looks at their recent behavior and response to changing climate. Additionally, they will be introduced to the geology and dynamic landscapes of southern Alaska. The level of instruction will be suitable for both professionals and lay geologists to clearly understand the complexities of modern glacier behavior in Alaska. Several introductory lectures will be presented by Molnia to set the stage concerning current knowledge of glacier behavior and to prepare participants for specific sites to be visited.
Anyone interested in developing a better understanding of modern landscape evolution in response to changing climate, with an emphasis on modern glacier processes and behavior, will enjoy this tour. The trip will also provide opportunities to learn about permafrost and Alaskan regional geology. View detailed daily itinerary.
