Geological Excursion to Central and Northern Mongolia
July 24 - August 11, 2004
ITINERARY
Day 1 (25/07)
Arrive. Ger – Hotel “Chingisin – Urgoo” in Bogd mountain, near Ulaanbaatar. Visit Geological Museum and National Historical Museum, Paleontological Museum.
Lecture about Mongolian Geology including Geotrip Route.
Day 2 (26/07)
Leave Ulaanbaatar (08:00) by minivan (4WD) and Jeep (4WD). Arrive Khugno – Khaan Mountain (15:00), camp, free time. Clime rocky mountain (1967 m), visit mountain temple “Uvgun” on the top .Geological presentation by lecturer and discussions. Overnight - tent (250km).
Geology of Mountain: Granite with gronosyenite (Triassic-Jurassic)
Day 3 (27/07)
Short stop at sand dune “Elsen Tasarkhai”.Arrive Kara-Korum – Mongolian old capital. Visit Monastery “Erdene - Zuu” Camp site near Orkhon River and Khangain Ovoo Mountain (1354m) and nice view from the top.Overnight - tent (100km ).
Geology: Granodiorite-granite (Permian) and greenshale with back shale (Riphean ?)
Day 4 (28/07)
Leave camp site, Kara-Korum. Arrive Tsetserleg city.Visit Buddist temples Zayanigegenii sum (1586 year) and Buyandelgerekh, nature museum.Camp at the mountain river, Taikhar chuluu , mountain Khunkh uul (2000m). Overnight - tent (150km). Geological presentation by lecturer and discussions, Evening fire party
Geology: Rhyolite dacite, rhyolite(Devonian) granite-leucogranite (Permian)
Day 5 (29/07)
Leave camp (08:45).Lunch at Chuluut river (Canyon 15-25meter) Fishing place ,Religions tree (Mother - tree), After lunch drive to Volcano “Mangas”Overnight - tent (230km). Geological presentation by lecturer and discussions
Geology: diamond mineralization related Cenozoic basalt eruption with olivine, pyrope, pyroxene
Day 6 (30/07)
Visit open pit of pyrope diamond mineralization at Mangas Volcano .Neogene volcano Khorgo , camp on the beach of the lake Terkhiin thsagaan nuur.Fishing in fresh water lake Tsagaan nuur. Swimming, sandy beach. Overnight - tent (50km). Geological presentation by lecturer and discussions.
Geology: Cenozoic volcanic activity
Day 7 (31/07)
Drive to North, visit buddist temple, who wish walk (5-10 km) to pass mountain “Orookhiin davaa”, Forest, flower, rocky mountain. Arrive village Jargalant (phone call to USA is available). Overnight near the Shine Ider (150km).
Geology: Gabbro various ages
Day 8 (01/08)
Afternoon arrive Moron. (Phone call to USA is available), Visit Museum and Danzandarjaa monastery (built in 1890). Overnight in the tent (140km).
Day 9 (02/08)
Short stop in phosphorite deposit. Overnight - tent (110km). Geological presentation by lecturer and discussions.
Geology: Precambrian phosphorite deposit Bilkh uul or Mankhan uul
Day 10-11 (03-04/08)
Arrive Khatgal and pass Jankhain davaa mountain.Free time, fishing, climbing Mountain. Overnight near the Kuvsugul lake. (80 km)
Geology: Precambrian carbonates, reef limestone, siliceous carbonate
Day 12 (05/08)
Drive to Tosontsengel area. Overnight - tent (250km).
Geology: granosyenite, granite (Middle Paleozoic), Carbonat-terrigenous with volcanics (Vend –Cambrian)
Day 13 (06/08)
Drive to Bulgan district. Overnight - tent near Volcano Uran (1631m) or Togoo (1923m) (280km)
Day 14 (07/08)
Visit biggest in Mongolia Erdenet mine and mining museum. Overnight - tent (120km). Geological presentation by mining geologist and discussions
Geology: Porphyry type copper-molybdenum deposit
Day 15 (08/08)
Visit Gold mines of the Zaamar gold belt. Overnight - tent (170km). Geological presentation by lecturer and discussions.
Geology: Paleozoic Shist ,Shale and granite(Devonian).
Day 16 (09/08)
Drive to Ulaanbaatar Overnight at the Tuul river- tent (250km), Good bye party.

Before Afternoon arrive to Ulaanbaatar, Shopping, free time
