Geology and Society Division

New Division Officers Elected

The Geology and Society Division is pleased to welcome Chris Carlson as our new 2nd Vice Chair.  Chris won a close race that was decided by less than 5 votes in a division election that had 18% turnout.  Chris is a scientist with the USDA Forest Service (Arlington, VA office), where he is the Forests Service’s National Groundwater Program Leader and the Groundwater Technical Team Lead for the Watershed, Fish, Wildlife, Air and Rare Plants and Minerals and Geology Management Staffs.  Chris earned a BA in physics from Carleton College in Minnesota, and MS degrees in Environmental Science and geology from Indiana University.  Chris remained at Indiana University to earn his Ph.D. in Geological Sciences.

Chris has co-chaired numerous technical sessions GSA annual meetings, and has chaired the U.S. government’s Advisory Committee on Water Information (ACWI) subcommittee on groundwater since 2007. Chris has spent his professional career in public service at the interface between science and policy, with the goal of address societal needs and concerns through the application of science.  Chris joined GSA in 1989, and has been a member of G&S Division since its formal establishment as a full operating section in 2004.  GSA has been Chris’ professional home for his entire career, and he also contributes to the hydrogeology, quaternary geology and geomorphology, and the engineering and environmental geology sections.  Chris welcomes the opportunity to help grow and develop the division as second vice-chair.

Please join us in welcoming Chris to the G&S Division leadership, and in acknowledging the fine service of our other candidate, Michael Phillips, in this tightly contested race. Mike is an inspiring professor at Illinois Valley Community College who is active in his community, serves on GSA’s Geology and Public Policy Committee, and regularly engages with the public on issues such as climate change, evolution, and the geology of the Illinois Valley.  We thank both of these fine geoscientists for their service to GSA and to society, and look forward to working with both of them in the coming years.
