This book provides a thorough account of the Triassic rocks on the Yangtze platform and adjacent basin in Guizhou Province, China. The Yangtze platform that stretches across south China was one of Earth’s very large and very persistent regions of shallow-water deposition. The Triassic System includes the thickest sections, spectacular platform-margin cross sections, reputedly the only petroleum source rocks and potential reservoirs, and the termination interval for marine deposition on the Yangtze platform. Termination occurred in the early Carnian; thus Lower and Middle Triassic platform rocks are overwhelmingly carbonates, whereas Upper Triassic are mostly siliciclastic. Some of the youngest Permian rocks in the world covered the platform and the transition to Triassic deposition is typically in conformable marine facies, so an excellent record of the recovery of biota and shallow-water carbonate deposition from the end-Permian extinction is preserved.
