Travel, Weather, and Transportation
One to two flights per day (operated by American Airlines and United) take travelers to Gunnison in May. If you don’t want to fly into Gunnison, you can rent a car from Denver, Montrose, or Grand Junction. The drive from Denver takes 4.5 to 6 hours, depending on weather. The drive from Montrose to Gunnison is about an hour, and the drive from Grand Junction to Gunnison is about 2.5 to 3 hours. Flying into Aspen is not recommend because the mountain passes are not open in May; thus, the drive to Gunnison from Aspen can take up to 8 hours, even though it is only 45 miles north of Gunnison. In May, expect the weather in the Gunnison Valley to be temperamental. It can be snowy, rainy, or downright sunny and pleasant; it’s Colorado, so be prepared for anything.
