Earth Sciences for Society!

The overall goal of the International Year of Planet Earth (IYPE) is to draw attention to the benefits of the earth sciences for society. View events in 76 participating countries and Join the Celebration!

Goals of the International Year of Planet Earth:

  • Reduce risks to society caused by natural and human-induced hazards
  • Reduce health problems by improving the understanding of the medical aspects of earth science
  • Discover new natural resources and make available in a sustainable manner
  • Build safer structures and expand urban areas utilizing natural subsurface conditions
  • Determine the non-human factors in climatic change
  • Enhance the understanding of occurrences of natural resources in order to contribute to efforts to reduce political tension
  • Detect deep and poorly accessible groundwater resources
  • Improve the understanding of the evolution of life
  • Increase interest in the earth sciences in society at large
  • Encourage more young people to study the earth sciences at universities

Celebrating IYPE in the United States

The U.S National Committee is sponsoring an earth science lectures series, with grant support from the National Science Foundation and the U.S. Geological Survey. Through partnerships with museums, universities, and other science organizations, geoscience lectures and events are being sponsored thoughout the U.S. on subjects such as climate change, satellite imagry, and erosion.

If your science organization has plans to host an earth science public lecture, contact the U.S. National Committee for potential sponsorship dollars.

The U.S. National Committee for International Year of Planet Earth is working to raise awareness of the goals of IYPE in the United States. The committee is comprised of representatives of 19 U.S.-based geoscience organizations.

The Mexico National Committee for IYPE has many on-going activities, including an outreach campaign for school children as well as a collection of books in Spanish containing easy-to-understand science experiments to help children understand a complex Earth.

Inagural Young Earth-Scientists Congress (YES)
On 25–28 October in Beijing, China, the Young Earth-Scientists for Society network will be hosting the first world congress for young earth-scientists for geoscience professionals and students under the age of 35. The congress will attract policy makers, industry, and decision makers to present and participate in discussions with young scientists on what the future holds in the geosciences. The YES Congress provides an excellent opportunity to bring young scientists from around the world to represent the next generation of geoscientists and to network with peers and decision makers.
