Connecting Industry and Students

Geoscience Career Program
Looking for a career in the geosciences?

Want a chance to meet with company representatives and recruiters?

This new offering focuses our programs that connect industry and students into a day of progressive sessions (with optional sessions a day before for students and a day after for interviews).

1. Half-Day Student Workshop: Careers in Geoscience: Preparing to Launch Your Job Search
Saturday, 26 October, 1:00-5:00 p.m.
This student workshop with an HR and best-practices consultant will help you successfully navigate the human resource professional procurement pipeline and covers constructing effective cover letters, résumés, and CVs, and preparing for the behavior-based interviews that determine whether candidates gain entry into the professional geoscience workplace. This workshop will help prepare you to interact with company representatives throughout Sunday’s sessions.
2. Student Research Highlight Session
Sunday, 27 October, 9:30-11:00 a.m.
This morning session gives you an opportunity to showcase and discuss your research, begin dialogues with and get to know sponsoring industry representatives and hiring managers. If you present your research in this session, you will be invited to the evening networking reception.
3. Lunchtime Geology in Industry Q&A Panel
Sunday, 27 October, 11:30 a.m. - 1:00 p.m.
This lunch, free to students (generally 300+ attendees) is centered around a panel representing various industries. Panelists answer questions, offer advice about preparing for a career in industry, and comment on the current and anticipated roles of geoscientists within their industries.
4. Geoscience Career/Professional Practice Session
Sunday afternoon, 27 October, 1:30-4:00 p.m.
The afternoon session offers you an opportunity to ask questions and talk one-on-one with the corporate sponsors, learning about the unique cultures within their companies and the types of careers available. You will have a chance to talk with hiring managers or geoscience recruiters and recent hires to answer questions about their jobs. Companies may have information about their work, sustainability initiatives, less-known projects in research, and other components of their positive contributions to our communities.
5. Evening Reception
Sunday, 27 October, 4:00-5:00 p.m.
This informal mixer offers a networking opportunity for the career program’s participating companies and students, as well as recent industry hires. Students who presented their research in the morning session, or those receiving an invitation from companies (at the companies’ discretion), may attend.
6. GSA Employment Service Center
Monday and Tuesday, 28-29 October, 9:00 a.m. - 6:00 p.m.
Companies will hold formal interviews to have further discussions with you. Please visit our Employment Service page to sign up for this service
