GSA Gold Medal Lectures
These informal lectures take place in the same room as the awards ceremony. This is your chance to meet the three gold medalists, Steven M. Stanley, Richard W. Carlson, and Naomi E. Levin, and hear them reflect on their careers (so far). Stanley, the Penrose Medalist, will be speaking on "Living in the past for a half a century: From paleontology to paleobiology to geobiology." Day Medalist Carlson tackles "Understanding Earth"; and Levin, the Donath Medalist, will tell us "Stories from the field."

More rain fell in the Boulder, Colorado, area (and other locations in Colorado) between 9 and 13 Sept. 2013 than could be expected for an entire year in this arid region. Reporters, agency officials, and geoscientists come together to break down the event.

Hickenlooper was a petroleum geologist prior to opening the first microbrew pub in Denver, and he served two terms as mayor of Denver before becoming Colorado's governor in 2011.
