GSA Endorses Position Statement on Nuclear-Test-Ban Treaty Monitoring
President Obama has asked the Senate to ratify the Comprehensive Nuclear-Test-Ban Treaty (CTBT), which is signed by 177 nations, including the U.S. In advance of a possible Senate ratification vote, GSA Council endorsed a position statement on the scientific capability to meet the verification goals of the treaty, which would ban all nuclear test explosions. Developed jointly by the Seismological Society of America and the American Geophysical Union, the position statement expresses confidence in the ability to uncover CTBT violations but is silent on the issue of whether the treaty should be ratified.
