Cyberinfrastructure Summer Institute for Geoscientists

This week-long program is designed to introduce geoscientists to commonly-used as well as emergent information technology (IT) tools, with the goal of promoting development of curricula and courses in geoinformatics. Individuals who are planning to teach such courses are highly encouraged to apply.

GSA Seeks Director for Geoscience Policy

GSA is seeking candidates for the position of Director for Geoscience Policy. Candidates should have demonstrated experience in science and public policy, an advanced degree in the geosciences, related or applicable fields, or similar professional experience. The position will be based in the Washington, D.C., area.

Discovery of an ancient rainforest in an Illinois coal mine by DiMichele, Falcon-Lang, et al. (GEOLOGY, May 2007) was reported by outlets including National Public Radio, National Geographic.com, Innovations Report, and New Scientist. Articles were also generated in the U.K. by BBC News Online, the Times, and the Telegraph.

The National Council for Science and the Environment (NCSE) has launched Earth Portal, a comprehensive, free and dynamic resource for timely, objective, science-based information about the environment.

OneGeology, a new international project under the auspices of the International Year of Planet Earth, aims to consolidate data from geologic maps around the world. Fifty-five nations are already participating. The IUGS will determine how national databases will be standardized, and hopes to have an online database available in 2008.
