Resources
NOAA Great Lakes Ice Atlas presents a 30-winter (1973-2002) set of digitized composite ice charts, and a complete multi-winter statistical analysis of the climatology of the ice cover concentration.
New online map from USGS, updated hourly, forecasts California earthquake hazards. Using an historical baseline level of risk, the program estimates the probability of damaging aftershocks throughout the state in the ensuing 24 hours.

• Open Access to Data
These statements were developed by the Geology & Public Policy Committee, and are posted with GSA’s other position statements. You can use these statements when you work with local citizens or contact your member of Congress about earth science and environmental issues of concern.

ScienceNow Online reports about a Rasmussen paper (GEOLOGY, June 2005) noting the oldest evidence for in situ petroleum generation and expulsion (by more than one billion years) from ~3.2 and 2.63 billion-year old shales from the Pilbara Craton in Australia.

A study by Wilkinson demonstrating that human activity (agricultural and construction) now erodes rock, soil, and sediment at about 15 times the rate of natural processes (GEOLOGY, March 2005) was reported by Natural History magazine.

Reseach by Heermance on two small northern California glaciers holding their own relative to global warming was presented at the Cordilleran Section meeting and reported by NASA's Earth Observatory and Science Daily.

Research by Kukihara et al. on a newly discovered cluster of dinosaur tracks at southeastern Colorado's John Martin Reservoir was presented at the Rocky Mountain Section meeting and reported by the Rocky Mountain News. The article was subsequently picked up by Scripps Howard News Service outlets all across the U.S.
