Net Dextral Slip, Leogen San Gregorio–Hosgri Fault Zone, Coastal California: Geologic Evidence and Tectonic Implications. As a major subsidiary strand of the San Andreas fault system in coastal California, understanding the path and amount of San Gregorio-Hosgri fault displacements is important for understanding the geologic history of California and seismic hazard along the California coast. This volume summarizes evidence for 156 km of net San Gregorio-Hosgri fault slip based on an analysis of onshore and offshore geologic mapping supplemented by reappraisal of key geologic features offset by San Gregorio-Hosgri fault movements.

Coal Systems Analysis. Current rates of world coal consumption are projected to continue at approximately the same (or greater) levels well into the twenty-first century. This collection of papers provides an introduction to the concept of coal systems analysis and contains examples of how coal systems analysis can be used to understand, characterize, and evaluate coal and coal gas resources. Coal systems analysis incorporates the various disciplines of coal geology to provide a complete characterization of the resource.

Resources

NOAA Great Lakes Ice Atlas presents a 30-winter (1973-2002) set of digitized composite ice charts, and a complete multi-winter statistical analysis of the climatology of the ice cover concentration.

New online map from USGS, updated hourly, forecasts California earthquake hazards. Using an historical baseline level of risk, the program estimates the probability of damaging aftershocks throughout the state in the ensuing 24 hours.

ScienceNow Online reports about a Rasmussen paper (GEOLOGY, June 2005) noting the oldest evidence for in situ petroleum generation and expulsion (by more than one billion years) from ~3.2 and 2.63 billion-year old shales from the Pilbara Craton in Australia.

A study by Wilkinson demonstrating that human activity (agricultural and construction) now erodes rock, soil, and sediment at about 15 times the rate of natural processes (GEOLOGY, March 2005) was reported by Natural History magazine.
