Communicating the Value of Geoscience
GOVERNMENT AFFAIRS
The 5th National Conference on Science, Policy, and the Environment: Forecasting Environmental Changes, organized by the National Council for Science and the Environment (NCSE), takes place 3-4 February 2005 at the Ronald Reagan Building and International Trade Center in Washington, DC. The conference will provide input into major environmental forecasting systems under development and explore opportunities for improving coordination among the many institutions, programs, activities, and individuals engaged in environmental forecasting.

Read the new position statement, Science and Natural Hazards, by the International Council for Science. The statement is related to dicussions underway at the World Conference on Disaster Reduction in Kobe, Japan, 18-22 January 2005.

Reuters reported on research by Lillemor Claesson et al. (Stockholm University and Nordic Volcanological Center) on geochemical changes in groundwater as a possible predictor of earthquakes (Geology, August 2004). Articles subsequently appeared around the globe.
