Correct answer: Harry Hess

This is a subtle question. Hess (1906-1969) circulated his ideas about the structure of the ocean floor in 1959. He envisioned a cycle in which the sea floor crust forms at the mid-ocean ridges and is consumed by plunging into the mantle at the deep-sea trenches. It was Dietz (1914-1995), though, who first formally published a paper on the subject and who coined the name "seafloor spreading." Heezen (1924-1977) with Marie Tharp prepared highly influential maps of the world's seafloor that clearly showed details of the mid-ocean ridge system for the first time. Jason Morgan (1926- ) was first to put together the classic picture of plate tectonics that has governed geology since the late 1960s.
