Tuffs, composed of volcanic ash and pumice particles that are bonded by natural cements or by welding, make excellent building materials and have been proposed as a medium for industrial and nuclear waste storage. Tuffs have unique hydrologic properties that must be considered when evaluating both water resources and industrial contamination in volcanic regions. Tuffs have been part of man’s environment for thousands of years and now underlie many urban areas, including 37 large industrial cities in 24 nations (including two megacities). The purpose of this book is to integrate academic and applied research on tuffs into a publication that can be used by a broad spectrum of professionals in science and engineering.
