Technical Program Proposals

Thank you for your interest in the 2005 Salt Lake City Annual Meeting (October 16–19, 2005). The GSA annual meetings begin on a Sunday, and end the following Wednesday. The 2005 program structure includes two formats which are flexible and designed to encourage excellence in programming. Topical Sessions ensure a successful, excellent program where everyone may contribute to sessions with some invited papers. Pardee Keynote Symposia expand the opportunity for high profile sessions on significant scientific developments that impact our science. These formats will contribute to an increasingly dynamic and stimulating scientific meeting that appeals to a wide audience Any individual or geoscience organization is welcome to submit a proposal.

Proposers Please Note: Before you begin to fill out the forms, in addition to text for pasting into memo fields, please have all of the contact information available for ALL of your conveners or advocates (full first and last names, full address and zip, phone, fax, e-mail).

Topical Sessions are a combination of volunteered and invited papers submitted to a specific session. Any individual or geoscience organization is welcome to submit a proposal.

Pardee Keynote Symposia are invited papers for a specific session. Any individual or geoscience organization is welcome to submit a proposal.

General Session Guidelines

Flexible and creative programming is encouraged for both the Pardee keynote symposia and topical sessions. A topical oral and/or poster session related to a keynote symposium or a combination of a topical oral followed by poster session is encouraged. Such combinations should be outlined in the proposals. A person can only be a primary advocate or convener on one session, and a secondary advocate or convener on two others (a maximum of three including Pardee and Topical sessions). Submit each proposal on a separate form.

Organizers are encouraged to have one or more of the invited speakers present an overview of the topic at the beginning of the session that would be of interest and understandable to fellow scientists who are not in the specialty field, but interested in the topic. This type of overview presentation will be so designated in the program and should be given by well regarded, effective speakers.

For oral sessions, the number of half-days allotted for that topic will be determined after the abstract deadline and will depend on the number of abstracts submitted.

Publication of Technical Session Proceedings

 GSA Council requests that proceedings of any technical session sponsored by a GSA division, and given at a GSA annual or section meeting, first be offered to GSA for consideration of publication. As always, submission does not guarantee publication. Acceptance is in the hands of the GSA Books Science Editor and the reviewers. GSA would also like the opportunity of publishing sessions sponsored by associated societies, but such sessions are not covered under the action of Council.
