National Academies Advisory:
New Home Page, Search Tools Improve Access to Information

October 6, 2003

The National Academies announce the launch of a redesigned home page and revolutionary search tools that make it easier to keep up with the studies and activities of the National Academy of Sciences, National Academy of Engineering, Institute of Medicine, and National Research Council.

The new National Academies home page presents the wide array of Academies activities, including Events, Top News, newly published reports, and the latest issue of PROCEEDINGS OF THE NATIONAL ACADEMY OF SCIENCES, the second-most-cited scientific publication in the world. Quick Links gives you immediate access to key resources, and Career Links offers career guides as well as the latest on employment, internships, and fellowships and postdocs. Features called Popular Searches and Topics - topical collections of the Academies' work in specific areas of interest - make it far easier to find expert scientific information.

A powerful new suite of search tools - developed specifically for the National Academies - integrates about 3,000 published reports with nearly 100,000 other Academies Web documents in a rich "knowledge discovery" environment. Not only is the user provided with a clear, relevant list of results, but also robust "Find More Like This" capabilities, "New Searches" derived from search results, and a unique "Reference Finder" that can use a snippet of text supplied by the user - whether pulled from a rough draft of copy or from a story in the news - to find pertinent reports from the National Academies Press.

National-Academies.org is a quick, authoritative source for scientific information from the nation's independent advisers on science, engineering, and medicine.
