GSA's premiere small-group meeting and field trip venues for collaborative research around the world.

NOTE: The GSA Penrose Conferences and Thompson Field Forums are continuing to run through 2019. However, the proposal process is undergoing an upgrade. The new proposal process will be rolled out in fall of 2019!

Penrose Conferences

  • Established in 1969 to advance the Society's committment to supporting the geosciences;
  • Named in honor of R.A.F. Penrose, Jr., a GSA benefactor, American mining geologist and entrepenuer, and GSA's president in 1930.
  • Bring together multidisciplinary groups of geoscientists to facilitate open and frank discussions of ideas in an informal setting and to stimulate individual and collaborative research.

Thompson Field Forums

  • Named in honor of James B. Thompson Jr., a GSA benefactor, renowned geology researcher, and professor emeritus at both Harvard University and Dartmouth College.
  • Capture the essence of discoveries or controversial topics pertaining a particular geologic feature or area for on-the-spot discussions.
  • Unique opportunity to exchange current knowledge, ideas, and theories with other experts on the topic and location.
